At Cornish Chillies, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We believe in nurturing the environment, supporting biodiversity, and reducing waste while growing our chillies using organic and eco-friendly practices.
Enhancing Biodiversity
To support the natural ecosystem on our farm, we’ve implemented several measures to encourage biodiversity. Sixty fruit trees have been planted across our site, creating habitats for local wildlife. Additionally, we’ve established a natural hedge corridor, connecting the farm’s boundary hedgerows and providing vital pathways for animals and birds. We’ve left a wild area, complete with cut-down tree trunks, as a sanctuary for creatures, and we’re continuing our work on a vibrant wildflower meadow to sustain pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Organic Growing Methods
Our farming practices are completely organic, ensuring that we work in harmony with nature. We never use chemical fertilisers, instead opting for natural alternatives to enrich our soil. Pest control is achieved through bio-controls, such as ladybirds, ladybird larvae, and lacewing larvae, which help manage aphids naturally. Even the cleaning products used across the farm are plant-based, reflecting our commitment to eco-friendly methods in every aspect of our operations.
Reducing Plastic Use
Minimising plastic waste is a priority at Cornish Chillies. We reuse as much horticultural hardware as possible, including washing and reusing plant pots and repurposing racking and plant labels. Most of our chillies are now grown in sustainable wooden beds rather than the individual plastic bags we previously used. By switching to natural jute twine instead of synthetic materials, we’re further reducing our reliance on plastics.
Minimising Waste
We are proud to operate with very little waste on the farm. Old plants are composted, creating nutrient-rich soil to support future crops. Chilli waste is incredibly low, as any surplus is frozen for use in products, dried, or collected for seeds. These efforts ensure that we make the most of everything we grow, while keeping our environmental impact as low as possible.
Reducing Food Miles
Supplying fresh chillies within the UK means we’re helping to reduce food miles and provide a sustainable alternative to imported produce. With our farm centrally located in Cornwall, we are well-placed to serve local customers and businesses, keeping delivery distances short. Moving to our new site has also brought the farm much closer to home for Sue and Scott, significantly reducing the travel required for daily operations.
