The friggitello is a classic Italian sweet pepper, often called the Italian frying pepper. It’s typically harvested while still green and has a sweet, slightly tangy flavor with just a hint of bitterness. The flesh is thin-walled, making it quick to cook—especially when fried whole in olive oil, which is the traditional preparation in Tuscany.
On the Scoville scale, friggitello peppers range from 0 to 500 SHU, meaning they are very mild and often perceived as having no heat at all. There’s also a Greek variety that’s a bit sweeter and commonly used in salads or pickled.

A tomatillo is a small, tart, husk-covered fruit from the Physalis philadelphica plant, widely used in Mexican cooking—especially in salsa verde. It looks like a green tomato wrapped in a papery lantern-like husk, but it’s not a tomato and isn’t interchangeable with one.

Their charm lies in the “pepper lottery” — while most are mild, a few can surprise you with noticeable heat. On the Scoville scale, they range from 500 to 2,500 SHU, meaning most are about as mild as a banana pepper, but the hotter ones can approach the lower end of a jalapeño’s heat.
